OK Beast’s Top 10 Game Trailers of All Time

0

With E3 right around the corner, I figured it would be best to prepare for the week by looking back at the best game trailers of all time. These are trailers that particularly stood out from the rest and have somehow stayed in the hearts and minds of gamers through the years.

10. Fallout 3

What’s better than a trailer that immediately establishes the feel and tone of a game? A trailer that is a slow pan through a bus that still manages to get you excited for the game. This Fallout 3 trailer tells you basically everything you need to know about Fallout 3 without actually telling you anything. It’s brilliant.

9. Borderlands 2

Made up adjectives, a robot doing the robot, and dubstep are what come together to make this Borderlands 2 trailer worth watching. The over-the-top nature of this trailer is what makes it one of the best out there.

8. Call of Duty Black Ops 2

It’s a running tradition for the Call of Duty Black Ops trailers to have a live action sequence featuring competing celebrities trying to gun each other down. This particular Call of Duty trailer is particularly clever in the way that it showcases the different features of the multiplayer while telling a brief story with a cute twist at the end.

7. DC Universe Online

It is hard to categorize this DC Universe Online trailer as just a trailer. It’s basically a short film. This epic trailer shows us a brutal battle between the heroes and villains of the DC Universe. It is 6 minutes of pure superhero fanfare.

6. Super Smash Bros

I remember watching this commercial as a kid. The 90s nature of this 30 second clip is not only what makes it great, what makes it great is that it is still hilarious.

5. Metal Gear Solid V

Metal Gear Solid trailers have a tendency to be over-the-top. This 9-minute Metal Gear Solid V trailer is no different. I can talk about the music, the cinematic style, and the reveal of the various features, but what really makes this trailer great is its audacity. This MGS V was aware of its own grand nature and it took that, and presented itself in a way that was bigger than life.

4. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

The beauty in the way that this trailer uses symbolism and sets up the world of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is underrated. This game takes itself seriously and the trailer shows it by presenting itself in a way that most games don’t. It presents itself as a work of art with a serious tone and interesting ideas.

3. Gears of War

The music choice is what makes this trailer. The way it clashes with what is going on, yet at the same time compliments it is beautiful. This trailer was iconic during the transition from the Xbox to Xbox 360 era.

2. Star Wars: The Old Republic

I still remember my first time watching this trailer. I had seen nothing like it up to this point. I was familiar with Star Wars but I had never seen Star Wars like this. If there was ever a trailer that made me want to pick up a game, this was it. I had no idea what The Old Republic even was but I knew I had to have it, only to find out the game was nothing like the trailer.

1. Dead Island

This Dead Island trailer is a work of art. You don’t even have to know what the game is to be able to watch this trailer and feel exactly what you’re intended to feel. In fact, I would recommend you hold off on playing the game as to not taint the beauty of this trailer on first watch. The composition, scenario, and overall quality of this trailer is unprecedented and since, I have not been able to find a game trailer that has surpassed this one in terms of just being a straight up work of art. If you haven’t watched this trailer, I would rather not spoil it. Check it out for yourself and see what the hype is about.
